So…Stupid…
Back at MCHENRY for a brief spell and some show called Beauty and the Geek was on AFN (Armed Forces Network) in the EOD command hooch. Now, I don’t really care for “reality shows” of any variety, but we have a pretty limited selection of channels, so take that into account…for whatever reason a couple of early twenty-something women had to answer questions about the U.S. Government and current events. Each young lady had to answer three questions…now I understand that it can sometimes be hard to keep up with current events and whatnot but what I witnessed just about gave me an anuerism:
One of the young women was asked: “What is the capital of Iraq?”
Her first response was: “Could you please spell Iraq?”
Wha?
When pressed for an answer she finally replied: “Afghanistan.”
Afgh…whu…did she jus…guh?!
The word ‘vacuous’ comes to mind.

When we started hostilities with Iraq, a friend at work-who is a doodler that likes drawing architecture and airplanes- was drawing a picture of bombs being dropped on a small city and he put the caption “Bombing Islamabad back to the Stone Age.” Now, he’s not the vacuous sort so I hold him to a higher standard than a reality show contestant. I had to break it to him that Pakistan was our nominal ally. It was Kabul that was getting shelled.
Sorry for the boredom. (NPR is on Armed Forces Radio) Our care package won’t get there since we hope you’re heading home soon, no?
